On Saturday, June 22nd, the Frankland Centre in Hammond Park buzzed with excitement as the community came together for the Vivente Clothes Swap – an event aimed not only at refreshing wardrobes but also at fostering a deeper connection among neighbours and promoting sustainable fashion practices.

The event drew in 18 enthusiastic participants from the local community, including members of the Hammond Park Community Association and dedicated staff from the City of Cockburn. One of the highlights of the afternoon was a presentation by Loraine Martin, known affectionately as “The Feel Good Fashionista.” Loraine passionately discussed the environmental impact of fast fashion, raising awareness among attendees about the importance of making conscious clothing choices.

Following the insightful presentation, residents eagerly browsed through a diverse array of clothing items brought in by fellow community members. The clothes weren’t just garments – they were opportunities to find something new, to embrace sustainability, and to express personal style. Loraine’s expertise didn’t stop at the presentation; she also provided valuable styling tips, helping attendees put together outfits that suited their tastes and preferences.

The community response was overwhelmingly positive. Feedback poured in, with many expressing interest in hosting similar events independently under the Hammond Park Community Association’s banner. This enthusiasm highlighted the event’s potential to empower local groups, though support and resources were identified as crucial to getting such initiatives off the ground.

The City of Cockburn played a pivotal role in ensuring the event’s success. Their Community Development and Waste Education staff provided essential supplies such as clothing racks, hangers, and additional garments, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable practices and community engagement. This collaboration not only enhanced the event’s logistics but also strengthened ties between the City and the Hammond Park Community Association.

The Vivente Clothes Swap was more than just a fashion event – it was a testament to the power of community collaboration and sustainable living. As we look forward, events like these promise to make a lasting impact, one wardrobe at a time.
